A very large Arita porcelain tankard, Japan, c. 1700. Hand painted in underglaze blue, with a central panel of figures beneath a parasol, walking in a woodland landscape. Two panels to either side painted with ducks on a river, and birds amongst trees.
The panels divided by dense, karakusa scroll, a motif repeated along the handle, which is pierced to accept the addition of a European metalwork cover.
Height – 25 cm, 9 7/8”.
Width (from handle)- 18 cm, 7 1/8”.
Condition – Chip to handle – please see images for detail. Otherwise excellent condition. No restoration.
