A fine and rare Coalport porcelain Porter Mug, dated 1820. The large mug with a blue ground, and finely painted by John Holmes Smith, with a scene of a man hunting deer, in an extensive landscape, within a gilt panel.
Having an acanthus leaf moulded handle, heightened in gilt.
Inscribed ‘JB’ monogram to the interior.
Signed ‘J.H. Holmes, 1820’, to the panel.
John Holmes Smith was born in Worcester in 1798, and worked at the Coalport factory. By 1851, he was no longer working in the ceramic industry, but was still working as an artist, most notably as a painter of portraits and topographical watercolours.
He died in 1868.
