Japanese bronze elephant okimono. Genryusai Seiya. Meiji Period.

A large Japanese bronze okimono of an elephant, Genryusai Seiya, Meiji Period. The sculptor has sympathetically observed the elephant, in a slightly different pose to that normally found in okimono of elephants, created at the Seiya foundry. The elephant strides forward majestically, with his trunk raised. His folds of skin, carefully rendered, and unusually, showing signs of scarring to the body, from battles with tigers.
Having bronze tusks.
Cast signature to a rectangular reserve.
Length – 43 cm, 17”.
Height – 28.5 cm, 11 1/4”.
Depth – 15.3 cm, 6”.
Condition – Excellent. No damage. No repair.
