Japanese Imari dish, Arita, 18th Century, Edo Period. The circular dish hand painted to the centre with an exotic bird perched on a rock, beside two further birds amongst flowering branches; within a band of flowering plants, upon a gilt karakusa ground.
Birds in flight, and upon rocks, amongst further flowering plants adorn the cavetto, which in turn is surrounded by a narrow rim painted in underglaze blue and iron red enamel, with cell motif.
The underside with floral scroll in underglaze blue.
Four character mark in underglaze blue ‘Fuki chosun’ (Good fortune and long life) to the reverse.
Diameter – 29 cm, 11 3/8”.
Height – 4.5 cm, 1 3/4”.
Condition – Minor typical wear to the gilding. No damage. No restoration.
