An unusual Japanese lacquered box and cover, Meiji period (1868-1912). The square box deeply lacquered to simulate tree bark, the cover similarly decorated, then further lacquered in gilt, with an insect flying above a flowering plant. Set upon four simulated twig feet.
The interior and base, in black lacquer.

Condition: Excellent. No restoration.
