‘Hope’, a pressed horn patch box, c. 1790. The circular cover, pressed with a continuous band of stylised flowerheads, amongst scrolls.
To the centre is a gilt metal roundel, enamelled with a scene of Hope, on a rocky outcrop, looking out to ships at sea. She is seated upon a large package, holding an anchor, and surrounded by symbols of trade – packages and barrels. At her feet lies a
caduceus, whilst a cockerel stands upon a barrel.
Glazed.
Diameter – 5.7 cm, 2 1/4”.
Height – 2.2 cm, 7/8”.
Condition – Age related wear to the box. No repair.
