A rare silver bookmark, Field Marshall Sir George Stuart White VC, John Bateson & Sons, London, 1899. The dagger shaped bookmark, surmounted with a bust of the Field Marshall, wearing his military honours.
Created as part of a series of bookmarks depicting Boer War generals.
Born in Portstewart, Ireland, he went on to have a distinguished military career in the British Army from 1851 to 1905, seeing action in the Indian Mutiny, Second Anglo-Afghan War, Third Anglo-Burmese War, Mahdist War and the Second Boer War. His military awards included the Victoria Cross,Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath,Member of the Order of Merit, Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India, Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George,Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire, and the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
