Worcester printed mug, ‘Rural Lovers’ & ‘Milkmaid’ pattern, c. 1765.
Fine Worcester porcelain mug, c. 1765. Printed with engravings by Robert Hancock; to one side, with ‘Rural Lovers’, a boy with a dog, talking with a milkmaid beneath a tree.
The reverse with ‘Milking Scene, No.1’, with the boy leaning against a tree, whilst the girl milks a cow.
Having a grooved handle.
‘Rural Lovers’ is taken from an engraving by Francis Vivares, published in 1760, after a painting by Thomas Gainsborough.
‘Milking Scene’ is taken from an engraving by Luke Sullivan, titled ‘A view of Woodburn in Surrey, the seat of Philip Southcote, Esquire’, 1759.
